about

Shanghai'd is the debut album by the Hot Sardines, a traditional-jazz outfit with a live tap dancer, founded in New York City by Elizabeth Bougerol and Evan Palazzo. They've played Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing, the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, Wit's End, and City Winery.

The album's name is a nod to Shanghai Mermaid, a modern-day speakeasy which—like the album—is a valentine to the spirit and music of a near-century ago, and whose stage the band has proudly played.

The Hot Sardines sound – wartime Paris via New Orleans, or the other way around – is steeped in hot jazz, salty stride piano, and the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Fats Waller used to make: Straight-up, foot-stomping jazz. (Literally – the band includes a tap dancer). They manage to invoke the sounds of a near-century ago and stay resolutely in step with the current age. ... more
